I didn't realize it was at night. I suppose that helps account for the density -- they're probably attracted to the house lights, or the prey at the house lights.
I've seen feeding aggregations of 100 or so dragonflies, but never one of the huge migratory swarms. I guess you mostly just have to be lucky.
